Neck & Throat

Neck and throat disorders are incredibly common, affecting millions of Americans each year and often disrupting daily life through pain, difficulty swallowing, voice changes, or persistent hoarseness. From inflammatory conditions like tonsillitis to more serious issues such as head and neck cancers, these problems can stem from infections, acid reflux, tumors, or even lifestyle factors like smoking. At ENT of Georgia South, our board-certified otolaryngologists specialize in diagnosing and treating a wide range of neck and throat conditions with precision and compassion. We understand how these issues can impact your ability to eat, speak, and breathe comfortably - that's why we prioritize early intervention to prevent complications like chronic infections or airway obstruction. Whether you're dealing with a nagging sore throat that won't quit or concerning lumps in your neck, our team is here to help restore your health and confidence.

Overview of Treatment Options

When it comes to treating neck and throat disorders, ENT of Georgia South emphasizes minimally invasive techniques that minimize downtime and maximize results. Our approach starts with a thorough evaluation, including advanced imaging, endoscopy, and biopsies when needed, to pinpoint the root cause. For inflammatory conditions like tonsillitis or laryngitis, we often recommend medications such as antibiotics or steroids, alongside lifestyle modifications to reduce recurrence. Acid reflux-related issues, like laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR), benefit from dietary changes, proton pump inhibitors, and voice therapy. For structural problems - such as salivary gland tumors or thyroid nodules - we offer options like fine-needle aspiration, robotic-assisted surgery, or laser procedures that promote faster healing and less scarring. In cases of head and neck cancer, our multidisciplinary team collaborates with oncologists for comprehensive care, including targeted radiation and reconstructive surgery. No matter the diagnosis, our goal is to help you return to normal activities quickly and safely. Ready to discuss your symptoms? Schedule a consultation today at one of our convenient locations.

Neck & Throat FAQ

Neck and throat pain can be confusing and easy to misinterpret. To help patients make an informed decision, we've compiled a list of the top questions we hear from our customers and the answers you need.

What are the common causes of a persistent sore throat?

Common causes of a persistent sore throat (that lasts more than 10 days or keeps coming back) are often non-infectious conditions, such as allergies, chronic acid reflux caused by GERD or LPR, environmental irritants, or throat strain. However, it can be caused by bacterial infections (strep throat), tonsillitis, or more serious conditions. If you have a sore throat for more than a week, or the condition is accompanied by fever, swelling, rash, or other symptoms, it's important to see a doctor.

When should I worry about a lump or swelling in my neck?

You should worry about a lump or swelling in your neck if it doesn't go away in two weeks, the lump feels hard or unmovable, the lump is growing, or is accompanied by fever or other symptoms. Swollen lymph nodes are one of the most common causes of neck lumps and swelling. Lymph node swelling is a sign that your immune system is working and typically comes on suddenly with tenderness but then slowly improves over 3-4 weeks. When a lump or swelling in the neck becomes a concern, an ENT throat specialist will perform a neck mass evaluation to determine the best treatment plan.

How are thyroid nodules diagnosed and treated?

Thyroid nodules are typically diagnosed through medical testing that may include ultrasound, CT scans, and/or a fine needle biopsy. How they are treated depends on the type of thyroid nodule you have. Some nodules require no treatment, while others can be treated with medication, minimally invasive procedures, or surgery.

What's the difference between tonsillitis and strep throat?

Tonsillitis and strep throat are different conditions with separate causes and treatments. Tonsillitis is a general term for inflammation of the tonsils, while strep throat refers to a bacterial infection of the tonsils caused by Streptococcus bacteria. Strep throat is treated with antibiotics. Bacterial tonsillitis is also treated with antibiotics, but viral tonsillitis is treated with pain management (like pain relievers, throat lozenges, or warm tea with honey).

When do tonsils or adenoids need to be removed?

Tonsils or adenoids may need to be removed when an individual experiences recurrent infections, when enlargement causes airway obstruction, or when there are concerns about abnormal tissue growth or recurrent abscesses. There is no exact requirement for tonsil surgery or adenoid removal. Recurrent infections or strep throat, with 7 infections in a year or 5 infections per year for 2 consecutive years, is one of the most common reasons for tonsil removal. Tonsillar or adenoidal enlargement that causes airway obstruction or sleep apnea is another common reason for removal. A physician will diagnose enlarged tonsils or adenoids based on the space that is obstructed and individual symptoms.

Can throat pain be caused by acid reflux?

Yes, acid reflux often causes throat pain when stomach acid travels up the esophagus and irritates the throat tissues. Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) and Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) are caused by bile that rises into the throat, causing persistent burning or pain. GERD affects the esophagus, and sore throat symptoms are often accompanied by indigestion and heartburn. LPR affects the larynx and pharynx, and sore throat symptoms are often accompanied by hoarseness, persistent cough, and excess mucus in the throat. Diagnosis is often based on symptoms, but an office procedure that allows your doctor to see the throat may be necessary in some cases.
