Septoplasty Surgery
Septoplasty Surgery at
ENT of Georgia South
ENT of Georgia South septoplasty surgeries can be performed under local or general anesthesia, usually on an outpatient basis. The nasal septum is a thin “wall” of cartilage and bone that divides the nose into two cavities. Many people have a deviated septum, meaning that the wall is crooked. It can arise from birth or be a result of trauma or previous surgery. Depending on the location and the severity, a deviated septum can lead to nasal obstruction and external, visible deviations of the nose.
What is a
Septoplasty?
A septoplasty is a surgical procedure that straightens or changes the shape of the nasal septum to treat symptoms of nasal obstruction. During the surgery, the septum is repositioned or removed to open the nasal airway. If needed, turbinate reduction can be performed at the same time.
What are the symptoms of a deviated septum?
-
Dry mucous membranes
-
Snoring
-
Mouth breathing
-
Headaches
-
Sinusitis
-
Decreased smell and taste
-
Post-nasal drip
How does a
Septoplasty Work?
A septoplasty procedure involves the removal or reshaping of the deviated portions of the bone and cartilage along the septum. It begins with the doctor making a small incision inside the nostril in order to lift up the tissue covering the septum and view the bone and cartilage directly. Once the septum is straightened, the incision is then closed with stitches. The doctor may place splints inside the nostrils to help the septum heal straight and minimize the formation of scar tissue.
What are the
Advantages of a Septoplasty?
- Effective relief from nasal obstruction that increases over time
- Associated with very little discomfort or pain
- No external bruising or swelling
- Fast and easy recovery
- Will not change the appearance of your nose, unless performed as part of a rhinoplasty
What results can I expect from a
Septoplasty?
Most patients report a significant improvement in nasal airflow within three to six weeks after surgery. Immediately after surgery, there may be initial swelling and nasal congestion. There is usually minimal pain during the recovery period and patients can return to non-strenuous activities the day after surgery, with normal activities resumed within one week.
