Nasal polyps are soft, non-cancerous inflammatory growths that develop on the lining of the nasal passages or sinuses. The painless masses are tear-shaped in appearance and can range in size from small to large. Small nasal polyps may not require no treatment, but the larger the polyps, the more likely that they will cause problems in the nose, such as blocking normal sinus drainage.

What Causes

Medical researchers still lack a full understanding of why nasal polyps develop in some patients and not others. In most cases, the formation of nasal polyps can be linked to chronic inflammation of the mucous membranes in the nose and sinuses.

This inflammation may be due to various factors, including:

Asthma
Chronic sinusitis
Allergic rhinitis (hay fever)
Aspirin sensitivity
Certain immune disorders
Cystic fibrosis
Churg-Strauss syndrome
Genetics

While small nasal polyps don’t always symptoms or require treatment, larger polyps can cause:

Persistent nasal congestion
Recurring sinus infections (sinusitis)
Difficulty breathing through the nose
Snoring
Reduced sense of smell or taste
Postnasal drip

Treatments such as corticosteroid nasal sprays, allergy medications, and antibiotics often relieve the symptoms caused by nasal polyps.
